The Role of Protein Arginine Methylation in mRNP Dynamics

    Get PDF
In eukaryotes, messenger RNA biogenesis depends on the ordered and precise assembly of a nuclear messenger ribonucleoprotein particle (mRNP) during transcription. This process requires a well-orchestrated and dynamic sequence of molecular recognition events by specific RNA-binding proteins. Arginine methylation is a posttranslational modification found in a plethora of RNA-binding proteins responsible for mRNP biogenesis. These RNA-binding proteins include both heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) and serine/arginine-rich (SR) proteins. In this paper, I discuss the mechanisms of action by which arginine methylation modulates various facets of mRNP biogenesis, and how the collective consequences of this modification impart the specificity required to generate a mature, translational- and export-competent mRNP

Log-Harnack Inequality for Stochastic Differential Equations in Hilbert Spaces and its Consequences

A logarithmic type Harnack inequality is established for the semigroup of solutions to a stochastic differential equation in Hilbert spaces with non-additive noise. As applications, the strong Feller property as well as the entropy-cost inequality for the semigroup are derived with respect to the corresponding distance (cost function)

Astrometric Detection of Terrestrial Planets in the Habitable Zones of Nearby Stars with SIM PlanetQuest

SIM PlanetQuest (Space Interferometry Mission) is a space-borne Michelson interferometer for precision stellar astrometry, with a nine meter baseline, currently slated for launch in 2015. One of the principal science goals is the astrometric detection and orbit characterization of terrestrial planets in the habitable zones of nearby stars. Differential astrometry of the target star against a set of reference stars lying within a degree will allow measurement of the target star's reflex motion with astrometric accuracy of 1 micro-arcsecond in a single measurement. We assess SIM's capability for detection (as opposed to characterization by orbit determination) of terrestrial planets in the habitable zones of nearby solar-type stars. We compare SIM's performance on target lists optimized for the SIM and Terrestrial Planet Finder Coronograph (TPF-C) missions. Performance is quantified by three metrics: minimum detectable planet mass, number and mass distribution of detected planets, and completeness of detections in each mass range. Finally, we discuss the issue of confidence in detections and non-detections, and show how information from SIM's planet survey can enable TPF to increase its yield of terrestrial planets.Comment: Minor corrections to figures and tables. 46 pages, 27 figures. Are State-Ranking Indicators Correlated with State Economic Performance?

    Get PDF
A variety of rankings appear regularly in the popular press.  Such rankings purport to indicate livability, economic well-being, crime propensity, obesity, and business climate, to name a few.  An investigation was conducted to assess whether state-ranking indicators developed by Forbes would be correlated with overall economic performance. We find that labor and quality of life have relatively high correlation with per capita gross state product; that business costs, the economic climate, and quality of life are well correlated with the unemployment rate; and the negative impact of high business costs on the growth rate of civilian employment is relatively high. The correlation coefficient between business costs and per capita gross state product has an unexpected sign. Growth prospects exhibit little correlation with state overall economic performance. The relatively low correlation coefficient between overall ranking and per capita gross state product or the growth rate of civilian employment suggests that it is not a good predictor for state workforce productivity or employment growth

Evaluation of the Importance of Time-Frequency Contributions to Speech Intelligibility in Noise

    Get PDF
Recent studies on binary masking techniques make the assumption that each time-frequency (T-F) unit contributes an equal amount to the overall intelligibility of speech. The present study demonstrated that the importance of each T-F unit to speech intelligibility varies in accordance with speech content. Specifically, T-F units are categorized into two classes, speech-present T-F units and speech-absent T-F units. Results indicate that the importance of each speech-present T-F unit to speech intelligibility is highly related to the loudness of its target component, while the importance of each speech-absent T-F unit varies according to the loudness of its masker component. Two types of mask errors are also considered, which include miss and false alarm errors. Consistent with previous work, false alarm errors are shown to be more harmful to speech intelligibility than miss errors when the mixture signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is below 0 dB. However, the relative importance between the two types of error is conditioned on the SNR level of the input speech signal. Based on these observations, a mask-based objective measure, the loudness weighted hit-false, is proposed for predicting speech intelligibility. The proposed objective measure shows significantly higher correlation with intelligibility compared to two existing mask-based objective measures

Screening effects in the electron-optical phonon interaction

We show that recently reported unusual hardening of optical phonons renormalized by the electron-phonon interaction is due to the neglect of screening effects. When the electron-ion interaction is properly screened optical phonons soften in three dimension. It is important that for short-wavelength optical phonons screening is static while for long-wavelength optical phonons screening is dynamic. In two-dimensional and one-dimensional cases due to crossing of the nonperturbed optical mode with gapless plasmons the spectrum of renormalized optical phonon-plasmon mode shows split momentum dependence.Comment: 7 page

Excitonic condensate and quasiparticle transport in electron-hole bilayer systems

Bilayer electron-hole systems undergo excitonic condensation when the distance d between the layers is smaller than the typical distance between particles within a layer. All excitons in this condensate have a fixed dipole moment which points perpendicular to the layers, and therefore this condensate of dipoles couples to external electromagnetic fields. We study the transport properties of this dipolar condensate system based on a phenomenological model which takes into account contributions from the condensate and quasiparticles. We discuss, in particular, the drag and counterflow transport, in-plane Josephson effect, and noise in the in-plane currents in the condensate state which provides a direct measure of the superfluid collective-mode velocity.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

Impacts Of Changing Financial And International Market Conditions On Output For Colombia

    Get PDF
Potential effects of financial stock values, world market demand, exchange rate fluctuations and other factors on output variations for Colombia are examined. An open macroeconomic model is developed to include the goods market, the monetary policy, and the formulation of inflation. The sample consists of quarterly data ranging from 1994.Q1 to 2007.Q2 with a total of 54 observations. A generalized least squares (GLS) method is employed in order to correct for both heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation simultaneously. The results indicate a higher stock market value, real appreciation of the peso, higher world market demand, a lower U.S. real interest rate, and a lower expected inflation rate would increase real output for Colombia. Increased deficit spending would not help raise real output, suggesting that fiscal prudence may be needed
